- to punctuate the purity and spirituality of Maria (use of a golden tonality to give a candlelight (votive) feel)
- to account for time of day
- to convey a hot and oppressive city through the use of rich color and jagged templates
- to maintain a heightened atmosphere, working in the style of musical theatre (accomplished through the use of symbol color, keeping the Shark numbers and neighborhood hot and the Jets numbers and neighborhood cool)
