Getting Started with WYSIWYG Design Software

 

This handout is used in Lighting Design 1 and 2. 

 

By following the outlined steps, students are able to build a virtual theatre and hang lighting instruments within minutes.  These steps are derived from my experiences with the program.

Create new plot ►Empty

 

Draw ►Venue ►Black Box

Width: 47’-0”

Depth: 52’-8”

Height: 30’-0”

Imperial Select

►OK

 

Options ►View Options ►Draw options ►Deselect Use User Defaults ►Snap to Endpoints ►Dimension Black Box

 

Options ►View Options ►Draw options ►Deselect Use User Defaults ►Snap to Midpoints ►Dimension Black Box

 

Draw ►Line ► Center ►Finish Line (US/DS and SL/SR)

 

Library ►Browse ►Library People ►Standing ►15 ► Right Click to Insert

 

Draw ► Focus Position ► Drop at foot of actor ► label A

Options ►View Options ►Draw options ►Deselect Use User Defaults ►Snap to Grid ►Interval: 1’6”

 

Use Dimension Tool to measure out four, 9’ increments

 

Draw ►Pipe ►… ►New ►1E ► OK ► Length: 39’0” ► Trim Height: 25”0”

Repeat for 2E-5E

 

ADD INSTRUMENTS

 

Library Browser ► Fixtures ► Manufacturer ► ETC ► ERS ► Source 4 ►Right Click to Insert ►

Right Click on Instrument ►Properties ► Fixture ► Purpose ►Focus Position A ► is the degrees correct

Use Library Browser to drop color and template

 

Design Mode – Adjust intensity and render

 

Drop additional instruments, replicating your lighting key.

 

Other fucntions that can help:

Quick Tools in CAD mode

In design mode, right click on looks column to save look.  Save a look for each Act for presentation.

 

Extra Credit – renderings or looks saved in a PowerPoint presentation. 

The renderings must be appropriate to MOON FOR THE MISBEGOTTEN and of a good quality.
