In Pirates of Penzance, political status and duty are paramount themes.  Status is gained through creating and promoting certain ideals.  Influenced by the Clinton administration, where politicians need to be just as concerned about their looks as they are about the issues,  the design contributes to making the celebrity class and political class one in the same.
