It encourages the professional training of artists and of future teachers in the performing arts.  University at Buffalo students present their work at U/RTA with the goal of being interviewed by multiple graduate programs at one location.  They then visit the programs on site for follow-up interviews to decide which program to attend.

TH 303, Scene Design I

-   defines the role of the set designer

-   focuses on the design process: text analysis, research methods, and three-dimensional response 

-   explores the methods by which the designer conveys design ideas

-   gives an overview of seminal stage designers and designs from antiquity on

-   gives attention to working in scale: sketches, drafts, and models

-   develops student’s ability to create and demonstrate innovative and appropriate scenic environments for the proscenium stage and flexible theatre through a class portfolio

 

TH 332, Lighting Design I

-   introduces the skills and tools needed to arrive at a finished lighting design 

-   explores how a lighting designer functions within a theatrical production process

-   offers projects including recreating the light from master artworks and executing lighting transitions

-   addresses fixtures, power, control, and photometrics

-   explores the controllable properties of light: direction, angle, color, and texture

-   introduces graphic standards for light plots and lighting paperwork

-   emphasizes the pre-visualization of the lighting design through hand rendering and computer generated images 

-   introduces advanced technologies as the class works collectively to synthesize light and sound

-   exercises automated lighting programming and advanced cuing techniques

-   requires research projects on the career paths of renowned lighting designers and technicians

-   provides the student opportunity to realize lighting for dance

-   culminates in a class portfolio that demonstrates the student’s ability to work in collaboration, to attack advanced design problem, and to provide appropriate information to shop staffs
