PRODUCTION NOTE:

Getting There was originally choreographed for Danceworks '98 at Northwestern University (Josephine Louis Theatre).  Subsequently, the piece was added to Mr. Siegenfeld's dance company's permanent repertory.  With Jump Rythm Jazz Project, the dance and its original design is featured across the country.  Venues have included The Anthenaum in Chicago and The Kaye Theatre in New York City.

DESIGN STATEMENT:

Out on an urban plain, inner hurt is concealed by a cool exterior. The individuals in Getting There start out with no self awareness and grow through a series of intense recognitions to realize that they are part of a community whaich shares in the same common pains.  The lighting parallels the arch of the dance, bringing a disjoined environment to one of unity.

OPENING MOMENT:

As the curtain rises, the figures are
static in a light which only partially
reveals their form.  They are
fragmented souls, stuck at a point
in life where they have suffered so
much pain that they have lost their
sense of self.

MOMENT OF RECOGNITION:

In this moment of recognition, the
individuals find themselves in a new
spatial dynamic, symbolizing a new
found place in life.  As their eyes
lock on one another with cold glances, they realize for the first time that they are not alone.  The lighting parallels their new awareness, revealing their forms with more completeness.

UNISON ACHIEVED:

Having realized self as well as others, the individuals are now able to reach
out as whole human beings.  The
lighting washes the complete form of each individual, allowing each soul to be seen and to not be treated
differently from any other.  A united
community has been formed.
